This is the working bicycle route for our research on the Groningen Energy Landscape. On
this route, visitors engage with the Netherlands’ gas history, learn about petroculture, the
impact of fossil fuels on societies, and the importance of an inclusive heritage practice. Artist
impressions from the open call are also included to show that gasfields in Groningen, which
are now being cleaned up, can be transformed into important cultural hubs for future
generations. The route was developed through deep ethnographic research, analysis of
dozens of hours of oral histories, historical research, and several
community meetings and mappings.
This is the written-out brochure for the route. It is currently being synchronised with the
Netherlands’ bicycle network standard for cycle routes. In June 2026, this working route will
be adjusted to national standards, and more route-specific details will be added. In June
2026, the route will also be integrated into a cycling and walking app called “Veldatlas”. This
platform is being tested at the date of submission. In the app, visitors will be able to watch
videos, listen to interviews, and engage with 3D models. The app will serve as a wayfinding
tool for cyclists. When approaching a stop, the app will draw attention and provide
information about the place.
The English translation appears first in the text, followed by the original Dutch version. The
text is targeted at Dutch visitors, so the Dutch version is the version of record in case of
differences between the two versions.
